Vice President Biden predicts that this, at long last, will be “the summer of recovery.” The stimulus bill is working, he said, and “more people are going to be put to work this summer.” But that’s not the way things are shaping up.

The latest jobs report shows that the economy shed 125,000 jobs in June. That’s more than in any month since October. Some of that was expected. The end of the census meant the disappearance of 225,000 temporary government jobs. But the crucial indicator of whether the economy is likely to add more jobs is the number of private-sector jobs created. While it’s good news that private-sector payrolls have increased for six months straight, June’s 83,000 new private-sector jobs aren’t enough to keep up with the more than 100,000 new workers who enter the labor force each month. And they’re just a small fraction of the 7.4 million jobs that have disappeared since the start of the recession.

The fact that the nominal unemployment rate actually fell slightly to 9.5% is misleading. That decline is due to the fact that people who have stopped looking for work—even if they have simply given up—aren’t counted. The broader measure of those who would like work but can’t find it stayed steady at around 16.5%, and the underlying labor force participation rate slipped 0.3%. At the same time, the mean length of time people have been looking for jobs jumped to a record—and incredible—35.5 weeks.

With so many Americans looking for work—and now that the federal tax credit for home buyers has expired—the housing market is starting weaken again. Home sales are down 30%, in spite of record-low mortgage rates and depressed real estate prices. “It sounds simplistic but it bears repeating: ‘No job = No house,’” Mike Larson, an analyst with Weiss Research, told his clients this week. “With so many Americans unemployed or underemployed, the housing market is going to keep hurting.”

This all suggests that the recovery has begun to stall as stimulus money has begun to run out. Although the White House is touting a host of stimulus projects taking place over the summer—huge increases in highway and clean water projects, the restoration of national parks, efforts to weatherize homes, and a substantial effort to increase broadband access in poor and rural areas—federal stimulus programs are coming to an end. And even as the federal government continues to try to stimulate the economy, state governments are drastically cutting spending. Developed countries around the world are doing the same thing, hoping to avoid debt crises like the one Greece recently faced.

Pressure is mounting in the U.S. to rein in spending too. But the U.S. is not Greece. Our economy is larger and less vulnerable to fluctuations in international trade, and our debt load is still more manageable. Concern over the long-term consequences of deficit spending is understandable. There is a real question whether we will ever have the political will to make the deep cuts we will have to get our finances in order. Nevertheless, the evidence is mounting that now is not the time to tighten our belts. Temporary stimulus spending has a relatively small effect on long-term deficits. But investing in bringing our economy back up to capacity could actually reduce long-term deficits by increasing government revenues. It was, as David Leonhardt reminds us, a disaster when we tried to rein in deficit spending in the 1930s before the economy had recovered. As it is, it looks like we’re in for another difficult economic summer.

The talk spreading virally online is that Google is developing a social networking service, dubbed Google Me. The rumor started to fly after Digg founder Kevin Rose posted a tweet Saturday, saying, “Ok, umm, huge rumor: Google to launch facebook competitor very soon “Google Me”, very credible source.”

Rose hasn’t offered any more tweets on the subject, and Google refused to respond to the report on Monday.

Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group, said while baseless rumors can spread like wildfire on the Internet, this one was interesting.

“At this point, it’s just a rumor – one of many that circulate constantly in the industry, particularly around something hot like social networking,” he added. “But if anyone has the reach and resources to be a strong competitor to Facebook right off the bat, it’s Google. They have the technical ability to build a solid engine, plus the resources to be able to scale it out right away.”

Olds also noted that Google has the clout to pull in a significant number of users right at the start. It may not be enough to put a dent in Facebook’s more than 400 million users, but it would be a strong start.

“Google will get a certain number of users right away just because they are Google and it would, assumedly, integrate with their existing apps,” Olds said.

The rumor might also be fueled simply because Google, which started as a search service, is known to be expanding from its core business at a fast pace and in a growing number of directions.

For instance, last summer, Google announced that it was developing an operating system called Chrome OS . Then last September, it released its Google Wave collaboration tool , taking another step away from its search roots.

Google has also extended its reach into the mobile phone arena with its Android operating system for mobile phones and its Google-branded and designed Nexus Onemobile phone, while also announcing that it plans to build what it calls ultra-high-speed broadband networks in some parts of the U.S.

The company also took a major swing at social networking sites Twitter and Facebook when it unveiled its Google Buzz upgrades to Gmail that make it more of a social networking hub than simply an e-mail service. Google Buzz is aimed at helping users better find the most important information contained in their flood of social posts, pictures and video.

Internet users in the U.S. have finally caught up with the rest of the world in their browser choice today, with Google’s Chrome taking over third place from default Apple browser Safari. The browser, first released just two years ago, has led Safari worldwide since last September, but just this week surpassed it in the U.S. as well, according to Internet traffic analytics company StatCounter.

For some, this is seen as a big win for Google over Apple, as the two companies battle over the search and mobile spheres.

Worldwide, the browser market is dominated by Internet Explorer, which holds nearly 53% of browser use, with Firefox coming in at just over 31%. Chrome follows with 9% and Safari with under half of that at 4%. The picture is similar for the U.S., but with Chrome and Safari coming in nearly even at around 9%. According to StatCounter, Chrome just barely took the lead over Safari this week with 8.97%, as opposed to Safari’s 8.88%.

Chrome has steadily gained ground over the past year, and recently has been stealing away the geeks and early adopters from open-source alternative Firefox. For many of these same users, it has been Chrome’s lack of features that has held them back, but as the little-browser-that-could has added functionality like extensions or location awareness, its speed and minimal design have drawn an ever-increasing user base.

In keeping with Google’s enthusiasm for the emerging HTML5 standard, many upcoming features of the company’s Gmail Web-based e-mail service will be rendered in HTML5, said Adam de Boor, a staff software engineer working on the service.

“We have things that we can do much more efficiently in HTML5,” said De Boor, speaking Thursday at the Usenix WebApps ’10 in Boston.

“HTML5 is exciting to me insofar as to how many browser makers are adopting it,” he said, adding, “I have high hopes for IE9.”

One of the chief benefits he pointed to is how the standard could speed the loading and execution time of Gmail.

Google’s current goal is to get Gmail to load in under a second. “Speed is a feature,” he said.

Early tests have proved promising. For instance, Gmail looks for those browsers that can work with version 3 of the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), a standard closely related to HTML5. If the browser supports CSS3, Gmail will render the pages using these specifications, rather than its traditional approach of using the Document Object Model (DOM). The company has found that using CSS3 can speed the rendering time by 12 percent.

HTML5 will also help in building new features. One feature that the Gmail design team is now working on is the ability to drag files from the desktop into the browser.

This feature will be important in that it will bring Web applications even closer in feature functionality to desktop applications, de Boor said.

Gmail will also make use of HTML5’s database standards. Now, the e-mail service uses Google Gears to store mail for offline reading, but over time that will migrate to the HTML5 standards.

De Boor also talked about adding new features that couldn’t be rendered using HTML5.

One will be the ability to drag files from the browser window onto the desktop. To do this, his team is working on a new data transfer protocol, called “downloadurl.”

“We tried to get this in HTML5,” but were unable to do so. He jokingly said that Google will have to lobby to have some of the functionality needed to make that happen added into HTML6, which, as of today, does not exist in any form.

Instead of rendering it into a standard, the company will “encourage other browsers to use it,” he said.

He noted that the company doesn’t wasn’t to revisit the “browser wars” of the last decade. “We tried to learn from history and be much more cooperative to the other browser makers,” he said.

Another new feature he talked about was something called “Magic iFrame,” which would allow a user to take part of a Web page, rendered in a frame, and pull it out and make it its own full Web page in a new browser window.

During the question-and-answer session, De Boor was asked if he was comfortable using JavaScript for such a large project.

He admitted that another language, such as Java itself, might be more optimized, but he also noted that Java is a lot more verbose as well. “At this point to me it’s a matter of choice which language you use,” he said. He defended JavaScript’s performance, though.

“Most of the irritation around JavaScript comes from how it is implemented in browsers,” he said.

Google just announced a small but handy new feature for Gmail: one-click previews for Microsoft Word documents. This new features works for .doc and the more recent .docx format. Until now, Gmail’s one-click preview feature only supported PDF files, PowerPoint documents and images in the TIFF format. The new preview feature for Word documents replaces the “view as HTML” option in Gmail.

The new Word previews definitely look far better than the HTML preview it replaces. It handles page breaks, footnotes and other more advanced features without any issues. If you want to edit the document in Google Docs, once additional click from the previewer will open the document for editing. You can also save the document to your Google Docs account without leaving the preview mode. Of course, you can also download the document and edit it in your favorite desktop word processor.

Earlier today, Google also gave users a small glimpse into the future of Gmail. At the Usenix WebApps ’10 conference in Boston, Google staff engineer Adam de Boor noted that the company plans to take “maximum advantage” of HTML5. Through this, Google also hopes to increase the speed of Gmail’s load time. In addition, Google is working on an experimental build of Chrome that could keep the web app running in the background and have it ready to launch within less than a second.

Earlier this month, Apple unveiled a new site to showcase HTML5. On it, Apple showed off a number of impressive web demos coded using only HTML5 technologies. However, at least on the main page, these demos were restricted to working on only Apple’s Safari web browser. So now Google is countering with its own HTML5 site — called, get this, HTML5Rocks.

Google and Apple are arguably the two biggest companies attempting to push HTML5 forward. Notably, both also dominate updates to the WebKit rendering engine (with both Safari and Google Chrome use). But both also seem a bit at odds with HTML5 because both have popular mobile platforms that use native applications not coded with HTML5. In recent weeks though, the two companies (which are in the middle of a war with one another) seem to be trying to show that each is fully committed to the open web.

HTML5Rocks features nine tutorials on HTML5 feature. And there’s a code playground to let you mess around with your own code. Obviously, all of this works well in Chrome — but it also works with Safari. That said, Google made sure to add in this note:

The presentation was originally meant to run in Google Chrome. Some experimental features might or might not be coded to run in other browsers for now. (Although you will cry out of happiness when you see so much running in IE with the Chrome Frame plug-in). If you want to run 100% of the demos contained in the presentation you might need to run Chrome with the webgl flag enabled.

Take that, Apple (and Microsoft).

Here’s how Google describes the site:

Google

Because HTML5 and its related technologies cover so much ground, it can be a real a challenge to get up to speed on them. That’s why today we’re sharing HTML5 Rocks, a great new resource for developers and teams looking to put HTML5 to use today, including more information on specific features and when to use them in your apps.

there’s a code playground to let you mess around with your own code.

That’s why today we’re sharing HTML5 Rocks…..them in your apps这句，看了半天还是不完全了解文章想表达的意思，真是头大啊。

The Motorola Droid X is excellent. It’s also a little excessive. This Hummer humdinger of a phone delivers the absolute maximum in state-of-the-art Android power, at the cost of stretching the joint between your thumb and your other four fingers. The Droid X will be one of the first phones to run Adobe Flash when a software upgrade arrives later this summer, and its features and quality set a standard for how other Android phones should perform. It gets our Editors’ Choice for Verizon smartphones, although there are now a bunch of strong Android-powered choices on Verizon’s network.

More than half the 2,733 developers surveyed by Appcelerator, a mobile-software tools provider, see Android as having the most long-term potential among operating systems. About 40 percent of respondents said Apple’s iOS would have the best long-term outlook, according to the survey released today.

The study yields another signal that Android is gaining steam on iOS, which will power the new iPhone 4, Bloomberg Businessweek.com reported. With some 60 Android-based devices and more than 60,000 apps available, the operating system is adding more than 100,000 users daily, according to Mountain View, California-based Google.

The Patch Tuesday fix that Microsoft released on May 11 includes two critical updates. The first addresses a vulnerability in Outlook Express and Windows Mail that could allow remote execution (that is, attackers could do whatever they want with your PC) if you visit a malicious e-mail server. This update is rated critical for Outlook Express on all supported editions of Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, and for Windows Mail on all supported editions of Windows Vista and Server 2008. See Microsoft’s security bulletin for the full details.

The second update corrects a flaw in Visual Basic for Applications that “could allow remote code execution if a host application opens and passes a specially crafted file to the Visual Basic for Applications runtime.” If you logged in as an administrator on your PC, attackers could potentially take control of your system, install programs, and view, change, or delete data. Microsoft says this critical update applies to all supported versions of Visual Basic for Applications and to any program that uses it. The update is also important for all supported editions of Microsoft Office XP, 2003, and 2007.

Microsoft recommends that users acquire both of these updates. If you do not have automatic updating turned on, the company suggests downloading these critical updates manually. You can do so by going to Control Panel, selecting the Windows Update icon, and then clicking Check for Updates. You can learn more about the flaws–and download patches manually–at Microsoft’s security site.

Adobe Corrects Remote-Execution Vulnerabilities

Adobe

Adobe has released a critical update for Shockwave Player 11.5.6.606 and earlier versions on Windows and Mac OS X. The update fixes a multitude of problems, all related to remote execution. Adobe recommends updating to the latest version of Shockwave Player, 11.5.7.609 (though it’s possible that another update will be released by the time you read this). Download the latest at the Adobe Shockwave site.

Adobe also issued an update for Photoshop CS4 to patch holes that could allow an attacker to control your PC. This problem affects both Windows and Mac users. The company says that “a malicious .ASL, .ABR, or .GRD file must be opened in Photoshop CS4 by the user for an attacker to be able to exploit these vulnerabilities.”

The affected versions are Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 and earlier for both Windows and Mac. Adobe recommends that customers update to Photoshop CS4 11.0.2 (downloadable files are available for Windows PCs and for Mac systems) to resolve these issues. The vulnerability does not apply to users of version CS5.
